[Digital Today Reporter Baek Yeon-sik] The National Radio Research Institute of the Ministry of Science and ICT was led by Korea at the ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 41 (Internet of Things and Digital Twin) International Standardization Conference, and a working group in the maritime/underwater Internet of Things (IoT) field announced on the 6th that Kookmin University Professor Park Soo-hyun was appointed as the chairman of the working group.
The Ministry of Science and ICT explained that this achievement is significant in that it provided an opportunity for Korea to lead the global standardization of marine and underwater Internet of Things (IoT).
In addition, from 2006, Korea started standardizing the marine/underwater Internet of Things (IoT) field centering on Kookmin University, Offshore Plant Research Center, Gangneung-Wonju University, and Hoseo University, and established four international standards in 2018 and two international standards in 2020. He added that it is also the result of efforts made in the past, such as completion of development.
The marine/underwater Internet of Things (IoT) field is still unexplored, and advanced countries such as the United States and Europe are accelerating technology development in the fields of marine resource development, fish farming, underwater tourism, underwater robots, and environmental monitoring. According to the related field market report, the average annual growth rate of the underwater wireless communication market is expected to reach 18.5% from 2016 to 2022.
Therefore, this achievement is expected to play a role in Korea’s entry into the global market in the marine/underwater Internet of Things (IoT) field.
An official from the National Radio Research Institute said, “International standardization of core technologies of the 4th industrial revolution, such as the Internet of Things (IoT), artificial intelligence (AI), and data, is a global concern. “Everything is important,” he said. “We will continue to strive to lead international standards in key areas.”
